Trip to Nepal
October 2006
Day 17- Ghasa to Tatopani

Tatopani was a very nice town with two hot springs pools at the bottom of town by the River.  We stayed in the Dalighauri Hotel, which had lots of garden, orange trees and tables outside.  This was the first time I didn't get a room with two beds, which was useful for storing stuff.  It shows how spoiled one can get, when before this I'd never done a hiking trip involving staying at lodging every night.  Today was donkey train day.  We ran into about sixty of them, some going in our direction and some going against us.  There were donkey train traffic jams at suspension bridges, and it was at times very difficult to pass them due to the narrow trail.  During the day, we passed through what I've been told is the world's largest gorge, the Kaligandaki gorge.  It can hold forty Grand Canyons.  However, it's so large that it doesn't feel dramatic.

Looking down on a donkey train.
Another donkey train - all the donkeys had bells on, which was nice..
Snack time - hard boiled eggs (they just call them boiled eggs) and 6.5oz glass cokes.  She's frying chapatis.
There were three guys trying to ride motorcycles up to Jomosom, where they were going to fly the bikes out.  It was very tough going.
Locals were very talented riders, going over wet stones and ruts regularly; I never saw one fall down.
This is some of the terrain the motorcyles were going up.
She was preparing pickled squash.
Nepal had many waterfalls just gushing out of the rock walls.  This one was more dramatic than most.
A woman washing her laundry below as I crossed above her on a bridge.
Another view of verdant Nepal.
