Day 12 - Churi Lattar to Thorong High Camp
We left Churi Lattar in the morning, thinking we might stay at Thorong Phedi at 4450M, or might push on to high camp at about 4800M. My only concern about High Camp is what if we get there and there's no more lodging? Do we have to go back down and do it again? Because walking up here is not so much walking as trudging. This is a different movement involving more body rotation and less leg extension.
The morning was cold and crisp and not a cloud in the sky. Walking uphill at this h eight is very hard - there's never enough oxygen in any breath. You pause and wait for your breath to slow down and get back to normal, which it does after about a minute. But 10 seconds after you start uphill, again you're sucking wind. I'm at Thorong High Camp now. The room is fine and my lunch (garlic-onion omelet, chapati and black tea). From my room, facing down the trail, I can watch the poor trekkers heading up the hill to High Camp, feeling what I was feeling not too long ago. The air has about 1/2 the oxygen as at sea leavel, so even sitting still, I suddenly get an urge to breathe deeply.
They grow mustard in the higher elevations. |

We're in Thorong Phedi, debating a bit about whether to continue on to High Camp, or stay here. |

A view through the gates of Thorong Phedi; note the angle of ascent.
On the trail to High Camp - a look back down at Thorong Phedi.
Thorong High Camp - the dining / gathering rooms.
Changed into my relaxing clothes - a small walk out onto an overlook.
My rooms; the room next to mine complained of mice all night long, but I heard nothing. And by all night, I mean until they got up about 4:30AM.
They forgot a letter on this sign in the dining room. Is it a W, or is it an S? |
